Adult Sunday School Classes

Beginning August 10

following the 7:45 service

Walking the Bible by Bruce Feiler - This book and dvd series have been described as “both a heart-racing adventure and an uplifting quest.” For the first two-thirds of each class, we'll follow the popular video series of the same name produced by PBS and featuring author Bruce Feiler. We'll examine events, people and places in the first five books of the Bible. Through the dvd, we will take a fresh look at some stories that you may not have spent time with since your childhood in the context of the land where they took place. We'll explore again, from an adult perspective, the stories of Noah and the Ark, Abraham and Sarah, Joseph and of course, Moses. All this and breakfast too! Led by Michael Burkett and Carroll Williamson, this class will meet on the second Sunday of every month in the Multi-Purpose Room-Lower Level immediately following the 7:45 a.m. service.  All are welcome.

Beginning September 14

following the 9:00 a.m. service

Abraham's Children: Striving for Peace - Inspired by the discourse captured in the book The Faith Club, this class seeks to strengthen our faith by enlightening us about the differences, beliefs and truths of the great monotheistic religions - Christianity, Islam and Judaism. Episcopalians across the world recognize that interfaith dialogue may be a factor in helping people of different faiths resolve issues of peacemaking, social justice and religious liberty. We'll hear from experts on each religion and will tackle the tough issues that keep us from truly loving our neighbors as ourselves. Facilitated by The Rev. Fletcher Montgomery, John Sherrer and Dana Turner. This class will meet in the Barr Center Dining Room and will last for seven weeks.

Christianity the Episcopal Way - This class is intended to serve as a welcome to the Episcopal Church and to St. John's in particular, as well as a refresher for those who have been here for some time. It will also serve as the preparation required for adults who desire to be confirmed by the bishop in the spring. The class will be led by The Rev. Mary Moore Roberson with assistance from The Rev. Fletcher Montgomery, lay members of St. John's , and a few outside guest speakers. All are welcome to attend, to hear and to ask questions. This class will meet in the Parlor, First Floor, Heyward Hall and will last for seven weeks.

The Essential Bible Guide: 100 Readings Through the World's Most Important Book - A bible study class based on the book by Whitney T. Kuniholm. Led by members of St. John's, our wonderful clergy and an occasional outside speaker, this class will take us through the Old and New Testaments in 100 carefully selected readings—The Essential 100. The readings will help us see how all the major bible themes fit together. Books will be made available for anyone interested, even those not choosing to take this class. Each reading includes insightful commentary written in a warm and inviting style. Space is allocated for opportunities to record your insights into God's Word. This class will continue throughout the year in the Multipurpose Room-Lower Level, Heyward Hall.
