Feast of Lights
January 6, 2008
The Feast of Lights is one of
the oldest observances of the Christian Church dating back to the Fourth
Century after Christ. Also known as the Feast of the Epiphany, it celebrates
the manifestation of Christ to the world. Traditionally, it is held on
January 6, the twelfth day after Christmas. It often features a pageant
with persons depicting the Holy Family, shepherds, Wise Men, John the
Baptist and disciples.
St. John's has been celebrating Epiphany with a Feast of Lights pageant
for over 40 years. While the Rev. John Barr was Rector at St. John's
, his assistant Barbara Bild and Acolyte Master Bill Woodruff put together
the script and produced the first Feast of Lights at St. John's.
Mrs. John Barr (Nell) started the tradition of a 12th Night Party following
the Feast of Lights service which features three cakes presented by the
wise men at the party. Over the years, the script has been revised
and more music celebrating the season has been added. Many of the
costumes have remained the same, including the apostles robes which are
the original robes made 40 years ago.
