New Assistant Priest called 'to protect God's sheep'

If you have frequented the church office or attended church in the past few weeks, you might have noticed a new face around. The Reverend Scott Ronald Fleischer accepted a call as the new assistant Priest at St. John's, and consequently we were anxious to get the ‘low down' on him. Scott was born the youngest of four boys in Minneapolis , Minnesota before moving to Bakersfield, California when he was six. Scott's father worked for Mobil Oil and his mother was an elementary school teacher, and today he is married to Victoria Fleischer and has three children of his own, Jack (11), Isabella (8), and Samuel (6). When not busy helping to protect the sheep at St. John's , Scott enjoys reading historical fiction, researching family history, and watching pro football with his wife (his team is the Pittsburgh Steelers). End of Life Planning Seminar: The importance of living wills and health care powers of attorney

In the Book of Common Prayer (p 445), the Rector and church leaders are “directed to instruct the people, from time to time, about the duty of Christian parents to make prudent provision for the well-being of their families, and of all persons to make wills, while they are in health, arranging for the disposal of their temporal goods, not neglecting, if they are able, to leave bequests for religious and charitable purposes.”  Join Jeff Brooker on Thursday,February 17 at 5:00 pm for a brief seminar in which he will outline issues for your consideration in light of this directive in the Book of Common Prayer. Those present will be able to complete Health Care Power of Attorney and Living Will forms for themselves at no charge. To register for this complimentary seminar, contact Matt Barrett at mdb@stjohnscolumbia.org.

Get your smile on for St. John's Directory

Let's get connected by creating St. John's first on-line family album…together! The church has partnered with Lifetouch professional photography to help us tell our church story through the art of pictures. Lifetouch will photograph member portraits in the multipurpose room in Heyward Hall between March 22-26 and March 31-April 2. Each participant will receive access to the on-line photo directory, an 8x10 portrait and a published directory. At the one-hour Lifetouch session, parishioners can expect to: check in; be professionally photographed; immediately view your portraits at the session; and have an opportunity to purchase additional portraits. Portrait reservation information will be available Monday, February 14 from the Parish Office. For more information, contact Michelle James at mwj@stjohnscolumbia.org.

What is a lectionary?

How long has this idea been around?

How is the lectionary organized?

What lectionary do we use in church?

So is this the Lectionary in the BCP pp. 889-921?

What's the big deal? How is that different or the same?

How do the RCL Old Testament readings work?

How the Episcopal lectionary has developed over the years
